Well this will be one of several post s on area Ice fishing spots and tactics.Lets start off with the basics. The first thing has got to be equiptment. The rod and reel combo is critical.I use all custom built super sensitive rods spooled with 2 lb berckley Micro ice or 4 # P- line for bigger fish.NO Knots are priceless in saving time and its hard to re tie whith numb finger tips.As with every other season knowing where the fish you are targeting helps.Other factors that apply are water temp color,Oxegen content depth and currents.Probably the most over looked of these is the O2 I broke down and boughtone of these fancy gadgets and it surprised me.As winter approaches and the temps rise and fall and bounce in and about Ice thawing from snow marginal ice and slush under the ice cools to 32.5 and sinks .Ussualy the highed concentration of O2 is deep or near creeks and under water springs. Its hard to explain and as I get better at finding these spots I will let you know as I go.With all that in hand were ready to Blast soe holes and fish. When It come to an Augers you get what you pay for .My personal fav is my laser 5 in And A gas Jiffy in the 10 inch flavor. With My Ice fishing trips gaining popularity I need a Gas auger for this season.AS far as jigs I am A Hali finatic!!!! these lures catch everything from crappies to pike and Ive seen alot of them tat work when other jigs won't.My fav is a crippled minnow in chartruce and copper. As we get closer to the season I am already in jig hunting mode .Get these things before they are imposible to find. This should keep you entertained till we get hard water.

don't think that you have to get special gear to ice fish. i use ice fishing gear all year round. an ice fishing rod is perfect off sides of your boats and bill you can admit you loved pulling up those bass and pannies on my ice rod up on black lake. the lures i used on the ice i pound blues, perch, and sunny's on hard and open water. swedish pimples killed the crappy this spring. and a vexlar works great on ice and on your boat so all in all ice fishing is just another reason to get out and fish while all your friends wait untill its warm enough to get the gear back out. a personal tip is only to use plastic reels because i find that the plastic's wont freeze as easy.

:DWell ice fishing is well on the way so hears one tip for ya. I know all you pro's know this already but I'm trying to help out the beginners. When you're jigging your bait and a fish comes in weather you're sight fishing or using electronics don't stop moving the bait so the fish can get it. Because 10 out of 11 times the fish will go away. Keep the same motion on the bait, that's what brought them. And don't worry they can bite a moving bait. It might be frustrating but it could take a couple of minutes for them to hit. Keep dippin' your jig!!
